Once upon a time, I believed that second chances were for people who didn’t get it right the first time. (So, basically, all of us.) But somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that I didn’t deserve one. That when I failed—at love, at career moves, at figuring out how to fold a fitted sheet (seriously, who invented those?)—it meant I wasn’t good enough. That I’d blown it.
Then life, in its infinite wisdom and occasional pettiness, laughed at me and said, Girl, you’re gonna need a second chance. And a third. And possibly a fourth. Buckle up.
My Second Chance at Love
If you’ve been here long enough, you know I once let a man cheat on me five times before I finally walked away. (Bless her heart, past me was trying.) I thought if I just proved my worth—if I was patient enough, loving enough, forgiving enough—he’d see that I was the one. Spoiler alert: He did not. What I did see, however, was myself—tired, drained, and realizing that love was not supposed to feel like a never-ending audition.
Walking away was terrifying. I didn’t know what love outside of that cycle looked like. But I took the leap. And then, when I least expected it, love found me again. The real kind. The kind that didn’t require proving, performing, or pretending I was okay when I wasn’t. The kind that believed in me before I believed in myself. My husband saw the best in me at a time when I still felt like a work-in-progress. He reminded me that second chances aren’t about making up for lost time—they’re about stepping into the love, happiness, and self-worth that should’ve been ours all along.
Second Chances in Life & Career
Love isn’t the only place where second chances show up. Life has this annoying way of humbling you just when you think you’ve got it all figured out. Ever started down a career path thinking, This is it! I’m finally where I’m meant to be! only to realize…you are very much not?
Same.
For years, I dreamt of becoming a writer. But life threw distractions, self-doubt, and bills in my path. I told myself it was too late, that I’d missed my chance. But creativity doesn’t have an expiration date, and purpose doesn’t just pack up and leave when we take a detour. The moment I gave myself permission to start again—to write the stories I was meant to write—I realized that my second chance wasn’t just about writing. It was about reclaiming the dreams I once thought were out of reach.
And now? Here we are. I get to write about love, healing, and second chances because I’ve lived them. Every book I write, every newsletter I send, is a reminder that it’s never too late to start again.
Why We ALL Deserve a Second Chance
Listen, I don’t know who needs to hear this, but let me say it loud for the people in the back: You are not defined by your past mistakes.
Maybe you stayed too long in a relationship that drained you. Maybe you walked away from a dream because fear convinced you it wouldn’t work. Maybe you’re standing at a crossroads right now, wondering if you even have it in you to try again.
Second chances aren’t just given—they’re claimed. They’re the moments when we choose to believe in ourselves, even when the world tells us it’s too late. They’re the nights we cry it out, dust ourselves off, and decide that tomorrow is another day to try. They’re proof that failure isn’t the end of the story—it’s just a messy, necessary chapter in the middle.
And let’s be honest—sometimes, the best love stories, career moves, and life changes come after the plot twist.
So, if you’re wondering whether you deserve a second chance, let me go ahead and answer that for you: Yes. You do. Take it. Run with it. Make it count. Because the best chapters of your life? They’re still waiting to be written.
With love, growth, and second chances,
Kimberly R. Vargas
